Pharmacies across Tanzania were running on paper ledgers, disconnected spreadsheets and memory. Stock-outs were common, expiries went unnoticed, and reconciling a day’s sales meant staying late with a calculator. We spent weeks behind the counter watching how pharmacies actually work before writing a single line of code.
Give independent pharmacies one calm, reliable system to run their entire operation: inventory, sales, prescriptions and compliance, without needing an IT department or expensive imported software that never quite fit.
The software had to work on modest hardware and patchy connectivity, stay usable for staff who had never used a POS before, and respect the regulatory realities of dispensing medicine, all while being fast enough to use during a busy queue.
We co-designed with real pharmacists, shipping small and testing on the counter every week. Each feature earned its place by surviving a real shift. We obsessed over the details that matter under pressure: keyboard-first flows, offline tolerance, and a layout that never makes someone hunt for the next action.
DawaOS launched with its first live pharmacies and now runs daily operations end to end. Stock is tracked in real time, expiries surface before they cost money, and closing the day takes minutes instead of hours, on a single interface that staff learn in an afternoon.
